We love the Tesla. It still is the best car (after 4.5 years) that we have ever owned. However, we are looking at other EVs as well, and this is a place to keep track of our research and thoughts on other EVs.

Why Look

We had a good year and were in a nice financial position. As we were driving one day my wife said she’d like a nicer car. We spend a decent amount of time driving together to coach, ski, etc. and she would like something a little more luxurious. The Tesla Model Y is great, but it’s not as luxurious as some other cars.

Since we can afford a different one and it’s something that we would enjoy, we decided to start looking at other EVs. We are not in a hurry, so we can take our time and look at different options.

Looking Online

There was a list of the top luxury compact EV SUVs. It contained a bunch of cars that we wanted to look at. We did look at the mid-sized SUVs, but we talked about the size of previous cars. My BMW X5 was great with 3 high school/college kids, but it was larger than we needed right now.

We also wanted a nice car, but not an $80k car. That’s a lot of money to spend on a car, and we wanted to stay in the $50-60k range. That eliminated a lot of the cars on the list, but there were still some good options.

Once we had a list of cars, we started looking at reviews and videos of the cars. We also looked at the websites of the manufacturers to see what they had to say about the cars.

A few videos of reviews that we watched:

It’s nice to not be in a hurry, so we can slowly look through the cars and consider what we like and don’t like.

The List

Here were the cars we considered and put on our list. A few notes as we’ve eliminated some of them.

Lucid Gravity - We weren’t sure this was attractive enough and almost didn’t try one. We did give on a try and loved it. Update We picked this.

Polestar 3/4 - This looked like an interesting car. However, someone pointed out that Polestar is having issues. Eliminated

Genesis GV70 EV - We drove the gas version. Still thinking about it. Update We eliminated this because of no CO sales.

Genesis GV60 EV - I’d like to see one. Update We eliminated this because of size. Too small.

Cadillac Optiq - On the list. Update We eliminated this because of size. Ride not as smooth as Lyriq and louder.

Porsche Macan EV - We considered it, but it’s a little too pricey. Eliminated

BMW iX3 - Still thinking. Might go drive one for fun, but I’ve been turned off by BMW high costs for parts and sometimes poor engineering. Update We eliminated this because I think BMWs are too pricey and underengineered in places. My X5 experience annoyed me.

Audi S4 e-tron - I wouldn’t mind looking at one, but the range (280) seems low. Not sure this is worth it. A C&D review. Update We eliminated this for no good reason.

Rivian R1S - Seems large, but it is nice. On the list to drive. Update We eliminated this as it’s not luxurious and too tall/large. It’s very inefficient as a car.

Rivian R2 - This looks great, and might be a good choice. I’m a little nervous about the first version of a new model, but we might take a look. Update We eliminated this as it’s not luxurious.
