I tried. I mean, I really did. After picking it up and putting it down, I left it for a few days, then picked it up again and set it down. I thought about it, changed my perspective, and picked it up again, but I couldn't read it.
It's a strange setting, quick paced writing, first person, about a detective, a hard boiled, down on his luck, scraping by, detective that's staking out an affair, looking for pictures.
But there's a twist. He's a dinosaur. I didn't realize that at first, so the opening scene when he's describing how Basil made him high, I was thinking it was a euphamism for cocaine or pot or something. Also the comments about disguises and skins not fitting were strange the first time, but made more sense the second time.
The writing just didn't agree with me. It's a neat concept and I typically like the quick paced writing style, the stream of consciousness, running from one thought to another, but this one, I couldn't do. 50 pages in I gave up.
My 12 year old enjoyed it and wants to read the others in the series, so for what that's worth. I'd give it a try since it's a series and if you enjoy it, there's more to read, but I didn't like it.
