Lost (Life)
Posted: 7/3/2008 12:35:06 PM

My wallet was lost this morning. I haven't seen it for a couple days, so as we're packing up to leave for the weekend, I was in a minor panic.

I've not been good about things in my life. I lost 3 or 4 wallets between high school and a few years after college. Enough that I stopped putting money in a wallet and made sure it was always in a separate pocket.

Then I switched to keys. It got to be where I always had a key hidden around the house and I made sure that whenever I bought a new car, an almost yearly adventure for me, I got 5 or 6 keys made and usually stashed one in my wallet, one at home, and a few with friend and family. I still lost 2 or 3 a year and it used to be a nice running joke with Tia how many keys I lost.

My brother wasn't much better. He lost my car keys during a day at Wintergreen when there were 7 of us skiing. That wasn't a fun night.

I've been pretty good over the last few years, though I lost a set of Tia's truck keys when Kendall and I went skiing and I lost a set of the 914 keys a few years ago when I was traveling. That wasn't fun as a guy had to come out to the airport late on a Sun night and make a key from scratch. It was amazing to watch, but nerve wracking since I wasn't sure he'd get it done.

I wasn't too worried yesterday, but today I started panicking slightly. I couldn't remember the last time I had it, so I started walking around, since I knew I'd used it recently. I remembered needing it for the new treadmill console and was sure I'd left it there. Nope.

Then I was sure it was in my other pants. Another dead end.

The floorboard of my car? Just some scraps of paper and napkins there.

Finally I checked Wells Fargo online to see if anyone was using it. I saw my last charge was at the gas station and I remembered that Kendall and I had gone there Tues night after karate. Sure enough, it was in the back seat of the Prius, under the middle where Kendall had moved it so she could sit by me.

Whew!

Sore (Health)
Posted: 7/3/2008 12:41:47 PM

I think I pulled something in my lower back. I went out yesterday to hang two gates where two had broken and while I was sore from karate, I felt pretty good. But there's a lot fo bending down and really working pliers around a bolt to drive it into the posts. Not much fun, and it's hard. One gate is level, but the ground slopes, so it looks funny (like it's sticking up), but I was too tired to fix it at the time.

I got back from running Delaney to karate and my lower back, the right side, just above and behind the hip, was sore. Really sore. I lay down with ice, but it bugged me at night and still today it's stiff, achey, and sore.

I must have pulled something, which means taking it easy for a couple days, but there's not really a good comfortable way to sit with that.

One Year Ago

Thoughts from the dkRanch archives, what was happening a year ago (or pretty close to it).

psp ( Cool Stuff - 7/4/2007 11:12:24 AM)

not quick, but I'm doing this from the psp

No Dash( Cool Stuff - 7/4/2007 10:07:58 AM)

Ordering a Dash with overnight shipping on July 2nd, late at night, probably wasn't the best idea. They shipped it yesterday, but I doubt there are deliveries today, so it will come tomorrow. At least I'll have some time to get it ready before my trip.

And guess what I found buried in Kendall's bag beneath her snacks in a pocket? My old phone. Figures. Oh well, I wanted a new one anyway and there's not cancellation charge.

Got a PSP for my trip as well. I don't want to go and having to travel for many hours means my iPod won't last, not sure about the computer, so I got a backup with a PSP. Letting SQL Server Central pay for it as a part of me having to fly around the world.

Spies( Misc - 7/4/2007 10:10:50 AM)

I love spy/thriller/action novels. It started with the Hardy Boys and Three Investigators as a kid and then the Mack Bolan series as a teenager and moved on from there. I discovered Robert Ludlum in college and while I've read lots of different kinds of novels, the thrillers are my favorite.

I re-read a number of the Vince Flynn novels this year and then finished the series and was looking for something else. So I recently started the Brad Thor/Scott Harvath series and it's amazing. It takes place around the world, spies flyinh all over the world, traveling to exotic locations, enjoying fine meals in between their battles.

But as much as I enjoy reading about it and imagining what I'd do in a situation, I know it's not something I'd like in practice. I hate traveling and it always gets me cranky. I'd thought for sure that I might never fly across the ocean, maybe one more time for Japan, though I'm thinking boat instead.

So here I am, 5 days from getting on a plane and flying to England. On one hand I'd like to meet the people from Red Gate, but I'd much prefer they take a company trip to Denver and meet me here :)

I wonder if Delaney is the same way. He loves karate and army stuff, guns, etc. But when we shot the .22, he was a little nervous. My bet is that he'll like the military life, but realize that actual combat (if he ever gets in it), isn't great.

What is this place?

This is my personal site that covers my interests, writing and thoughts. I used to have an emphasis on SQL Server, but most of my work in this area is available at SQL Server Central. This site is dedicated to my kids: Kyle ( 16 ) , Delaney ( 9 ) , and Kendall ( 7 ) .
